What does language level A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, & C2 mean?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It divides language proficiency into six levels, from A1 for beginners to C2 for proficiency:   German Language Course in Pune

A1 (Beginner):

  • Understanding: Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very simple sentences focused on the exchange of basic information on matters of a concrete type.
  • Speaking: Can introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer simple questions about personal details – for example, where they live, people they know and things they have.
  • Reading: Can understand very short, simple texts.
  • Writing: Can write very short, simple notes and messages.

A2 (Elementary):

  • Understanding: Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g., very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).  
  • Speaking: Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.  
  • Reading: Can understand short, simple texts. German Language Classes in Pune
  • Writing: Can write simple, short texts on topics which are familiar, or of personal interest.

B1 (Intermediate):

  • Understanding: Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can understand the main point of many radio or TV broadcasts on current affairs or matters of personal interest when the delivery is relatively clear and the accent is standard.  
  • Speaking: Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.  
  • Reading: Can understand texts that consist mainly of high-frequency everyday or job-related language. Can understand most news reports and articles on current topics.
  • Writing: Can write clear, simple and coherent text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.

B2 (Upper Intermediate):

  • Understanding: Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialisation. Can understand most TV news and current affairs programmes.   German Language Training in Pune
  • Speaking: Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.  
  • Reading: Can read articles and reports and understand longer pieces of text.  
  • Writing: Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to their interests.

C1 (Advanced):

  • Understanding: Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can understand long and complex spoken texts even when they are not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not explicitly stated.
  • Speaking: Can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.  
  • Reading: Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can understand long and complex spoken texts even when they are not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not explicitly stated.
  • Writing: Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.  

C2 (Proficiency):  

  • Understanding: Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can reconstruct texts from different spoken and written sources, recognising nuances of meaning even in more complex situations.
  • Speaking: Can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without virtually any obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.  
  • Reading: Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can understand long and complex spoken texts even when they are not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not explicitly stated.
  • Writing: Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
