Saturnalia was never banned what they did was not to bring Christianity to replace Saturnalia but alongside, alongside the winter solstice and they introduced many of the pagan practices associated with pagan worshipers into Christianity. So, is not like your village shrine is broken down and a new church is built no but a case of the village shrine side by side with the church inside the same compound.
